Environmental Impact Assessment

Every waste management system has its own environmental impact, whether it considers using a landfill, a waste incinerator, a composting plant or other technologies. This impact is determined by the kind of emissions released to the surrounding environment, in the air, in the ground and in the water.
In this page we ask you to insert some data which are useful to evaluate the environmental impact arising from the simultaneous application of all common social "alternatives" available today for the management of food waste included in the so-called: Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW).
If you wish, you may carry out this assessment alone, comparing in a overall view, in the next page, the values of the most common emissions resulting from the application of the following disposal systems:

  • door to door collecting system;
  • food waste disposers collecting system;
  • compact food waste reduction system;
  • modular food waste reduction system (modular dehydrating system);

to the chosen amount of OFMSW in a:

  • landfill;
  • composting plant;
  • power station (waste incinerator generating electricity);
  • anaerobic digester to generate biogas from wastewater treatment sludge.

indicate the main parameters which describe the "quality" of the waste water:
BOD5(grams/person/day):
means the Biochemical Oxygen Demand after 5 days and measures the oxygen consumption required to oxidise all the organic matter. The formula accepts values between 50 and 80 gr/p/d
  gr/ab/g
COD(grams/person/day):
means the Chemical Oxygen Demand and measures the oxygen consumption necessary to oxidise all the organic and the oxidable inorganic matter contained in the sewage water. The formula accepts values between 100 and 180 gr/p/d
  gr/ab/g
SS(grams/person/day):
means the Total Suspended Solids. The formula accepts values between 50 and 110 gr/p/d
  gr/ab/g
TKN(grams/person/day):
means the total nitrogen content. The formula accepts values between 7 and 15 gr/p/d
  gr/ab/g
Ptot(grams/person/day):
means the total phosphorous content.The formula accepts values between 1 and 4 gr/p/d
  gr/ab/g
Grease and fats(grams/person/day):
The formula accepts values between 5 and 20 gr/p/d
  gr/ab/g
