The European waste legislation has, as its main goal, the reduction of direct disposal of waste in landfills through, on the one hand, the reduction in their production and, on the other hand, the increase in source separation collecting system in order to recycle and recovery waste collected. For years now, in our cities, the source separated collecting system of food waste has been launched, allowing the production of "organic" fertilizer (compost) from organic waste or food scraps. Nevertheless, such a collection is still a burden for the citizens, and consequently, a management problem for municipalities. Not everyone can, yet, fully understand the real needs and purpose of a proper source separated collecting system. So it often occurs that the negative aspects overshadow the success of such an initiative. The reticence generally concerns odours and hygiene in the kitchen, which impose a daily care of the garbage and, often, even of the relative bin. In addition, the collection service struggles to remove quickly the accumulation of smelly bins along the roads, often exposed outside the schedules imposed by the appropriate municipal regulations due to insufficiency of space condominium. All of this leads, inevitably, to a significant increase in economic and environmental costs for all the community, likewise to an increase of dirt on the roads and urban traffic for their transport. During the last years, Ecofast has promoted new and important achievements in the field of the source separated collection system of organic waste, as everybody knows the most critical fraction of MSW for environmental reasons (fermentations, odours, leachate, attraction of animals) and economical (sanitization costs of the bins, frequency of collection, low quality of compost achievable). Follow the Guided itinerary to discover the advantages that you may draw from an optimal food waste management. |
